Rule #19: Create a whole bed dedicated to green beans!

So the green beans are finally here and looking healthy.  I planted supermarconi, marconi, provider, and vanguard.  I just planted another round so that I don't run out and I am hoping that I will actually be able to freeze some this year.  We eat a ton of green beans when we have them, so one of my main goals this year was to increase my bean production because we have been having some bad years with it in the past. Hence the large bed dedicated to beans! We had a great bunch of peas and it looks like we might get another good round in before the plants burn up this year.  I picked the rest of the Tatsoi that was slowly being eaten by caterpillars as well as the kale that seemed like it was bolting.  It's my first time with this Tuscan Kale so I left a few in to see what they do.  The caterpillars liked them too.  Luckily my swiss chard remains pest free for the most part.  I also picked up some lettuce, squash blossoms and 2 baby zucchini that stalled out in the growth department.  My dad always says that you have to knock off a few of the first ones, because they just don't develop right.  most everything else in the garden is looking good. I planted some more fennel and will do more beets and carrots for succession planting.  Really trying to work on that as you can see.  I am really looking forward to starting the radicchio in a few weeks.  Check out some other harvests around the world at Daphne's Dandelions in my links!

  1. We love green beans too. I grow a bed of bush beans and pole beans too. My pole beans are growing along beautifully but the bush beans had some spotty germination so not as nice a stand as I had last year. Oh well, between the two crops I will have more than we can use. We always blanch and freeze them for use in the winter months.

  2. That happened with my pole beans because they were older and I think some squirrels got some here and there. I just keep filling in where there is an empty spot! I hope that I will be able to freeze. Not only am I crazy about green beans but my girls can eat a bunch too.

  3. Delicious looking harvest! We planted the Franchi radicchio mix, chicoria misti, but it looks like one variety has overtaken the others so far... I'll be following your planting to see what to expect!

    1. I'll have to check out which red ones are in that mix. I have done Verona and they are good. Small also, but they don't look that crunchy and tender. I am also going to try Palla Rosso this year. We shall see. I am most excited about the Puntarelle!!!!

  6. Beautiful harvest. I also plant a whole bed of bush beans, usually Provider and Jade. This year I added pole beans as well. You can only eat so much salad but I can eat a huge quantity of beans.

    1. Thanks! They say beans are usually the easiest. I am thankful I am finally having a better year. It has been good to do a variety of beans and more disease resistant ones. Although Roma II are supposed to be disease resistant they never did very well here. Good Luck!

  9. Nice green beans! With a whole bed of beans you should have plenty to eat and freeze. This is my first year growing beans for drying- kidney and black. I'm hoping they produce well.
